I had to check something, so I went through my amazon purchases history for 2014.

The list literally consists of industrial quantities of blood-clotting gauze, combat-application tourniquets, a pink flowery backpack, a vibrator, and a book about the golden age of shtetls.

…I think that sums me up better than, um, most anything.

Was the book good?

I haven't got around to reading it yet, but I liked Petrovsky-Shtern's earlier books, and his talk at a book launch for this one.

Hmmm, sounds interesting, maybe I should try it (one day I will get buried under a (partially virtual) pile of books I intend to read. Though I do get to some of them sooner or later - like, this year I've been reading some bits from your father's book which I had for about six years...)

Btw, Petrovsky's sister has a new book out too (Vielleicht Esther), and it's also absolutely fantastic. In a nutshell, it's about a quest to reconstruct the family history, but it's much more ironic than that description implies. Highly recommended if you read German (or if you are willing to brave the Ukrainian translation). I hear you on the uncontrollable proliferation of the tbr pile though.

Oh wow, cool! Which one is that? Could you give me the ungooglable abbreviation of the title, or, like, comment and delete it?

I definitely don't read German, I have much better chances with Ukrainian. Sounds v. interesting!

У. х-ний пе-ад ungooglable enough? Basically, I am a weird person who is interested in reading about people whose work she currently is unable to appreciate due to not enough language. I can sort of do nonfiction, but literature is a different kettle of fish.

(weird moment: I tried to decipher a poetical quote and the online dictionary did not know what's гилястий (IIRC). And then I remembered москаляку на гиляку and deciphered it on my own from there...)

Yep, perfectly ungooglable, and it also has the added benefit of looking like a euphemism for something real dirty XD

Ahaha, okay, that's the best story about the woes and challenges of second language acquisition EVER, hilarious in a dark region-specific way XD
