is there a(nother) fangirl in the house?

Dear people with experience in hockey RPS: is the immediate Crosby=>Ovechkin association something typical of civilians too, or is it a fandom thing? Inquiring minds want to know!

[Background:

A roommate: It's playoffs!

Me: *busily typing out tentacle porn* Cool, what sport is that?

A roommate: Hockey!

Me: Oh cool, I have friends who are so into hockey smut. I think they are into Crosby?

A roommate: Meh, not my team, but speaking of Crosby, have you heard of Ovechkin?

Me: ...I might have read a smutty fic or two about them, yes.

And now she's strutting around the house wearing an awesome pendant: Ovechkin's face photoshopped onto Oviceraptor(?) dinosaur, raising the household quotient of fannish awesomeness by about 200%.

I want another fangirl in the house! But sports geekery counts anyways, I guess.]

WOW you don't even understand how much Crosby/Ovechkin is a standard civilian pairing (albeit one that was more popular with civilians a few years ago, but people tend to hold on to their ships, inside and outside of fandom). I'd say both their IRL careers are defined in large part by the mainstream media and their mainstream fans being interested in Crosby/Ovechkin. SAY THE WORD and I'll give you way more on this topic but suffice it to say, this is a real commercial produced about them for real money: wizarding duel in the rain. And it's not the only one to specifically feature their relationship. They've done Vanity Fair photoshoots together.

Regardless though, if she's at all open to porn/fic, going from civilian fondness for Crosby/Ovechkin to reading fic is a very, very short journey in my experience.

I mean, I'm just saying here's Crosby and Ovechkin dressed in skin-tight clothing bring a birthday cake to the hockey league's chief disciplinarian. (Yes, that's a thing. There's a chief disciplinarian. There's also something called the combine where 17 year old boys' bodies are measured and evaluated so the stats can be passed on to their future owners. Literally. It's a beautiful fandom to be in.) Like, that is a thing they've done, in real life. The shipping takes care of itself.

Ahaha, yeah, I remember that part from our conversations! It's like a dystopian AU, only real, and with super-expensive ship promo materials. *deeply impressed* Truly, a marvelous fandom if ever there was one.

I feel like I failed you: all that rigorous training in TA, and I couldn't even hold a meaningful conversation with her that would not veer off into fic recs, and we are kinda not at that stage yet with her XD But wow, I totally have the roommate whom you deserve!

THAT COMMERCIAL. I'm sure there's a commonsense, non-fandomy explanation for that. Just, not in this universe here.

OK OK I'll just link to one more commercial: Ovechkin pranks Crosby during a road trip. This is totally not a fic! Professional PR people thought this was a good idea!

You say that like it's mutually exclusive. They probably do both, but they only have the $ to film the PG parts of it.
