Gotta admire the hutzpah of the British TV series creators. I can just imagine their gruesome one-upmanship going something like this:
"We need to do something for our Christmas special. Christmas, that time when families come together to cheer and celebrate- you know what will be awesome for a Christmas special? Killing the protag, that's what!"
"Just one protag? For OUR Christmas special, we're killing off 3/4 of the cast, that's how special we are."
(Why yes, it is rather obvious that I was not watching one of these shows, and intensely disliked that protag on the other show. As it is, I can just chuckle at their notions of season-appropriate motifs.)
