What with the Fifty Shades of WTF and its extensive media coverage, I feel like, some 7 years from now, we will all be sitting here and sighing wistfully, "We wrote fanfiction before it was cool."

Or maybe, "We wrote fanfiction when it was still cool." That is, before it was tainted by association with That Book, with its twin anti-cool factors of commercialism and aesthetic awfulness.

Well, there's still some stigma attached to creating elaborate erotic stories about somebody else's characters. I'm not quite sure how long that might take, but, theoretically, I can imagine a future where, say, werewolf bonding BDSM might become a functional equivalent of gardening: a tame hobby one might mention in passing without meriting any raised eyebrows.
